What is Cupping? Cupping is a therapeutic method used in Chinese medicine. Following the basic theory of “qi” (chi) and yin and yang theory of Chinese medicine, cupping is useful for a number of ailments such as pain, detox, poor circulation, lowered immunity etc. As the name implies, cupping involves using cups and suction to affect local circulation and nerves, break up scar tissue or muscle tightness, draw out toxins and increase energy and relieve stagnation. Traditionally cups made of glass or bamboo are used along with a flame source to create the suction between the cup and the skin. The cups are placed along the same system of points and meridians used for acupuncture and shiatsu. The therapist may leave the cups in one place or move the cups (using oil as a lubricant) in massage-like motions, depending on the condition being treated. Depending on the strength of suction and the duration of the treatment, the cups will leave bruise-like marks that will go away within 48 hours. Dr. Ling uses a vacuum cupping appliance for better suction control and increased safety instead of the traditional flame and glass cup method. Therefore the cupping level can be adjusted to the patient’s comfort level. Cupping can be a good alternative to acupuncture for those who dislike needles. What can be treated with cupping?
